Laurence Fishburne e' nato il 30 Luglio 1961 ad Augusta, in Georgia, negli Stati Uniti.
I genitori divorziano mentre lui e' ancora piccolo, e si trasferisce a Brooklyn.
Fin da giovane mostra un grande predisposizione per la recitazione, ed inizia ad esibirsi a Teatro fin dall'eta' di 11 anni.
Si sposa nel 1985 con la collega Hajna O. Moss.
Sposa la seconda moglie, l'attrice Gina Torres, nel 2002.
